Add your first brand
The fastest path: paste your website URL and let Pranas auto-fill positioning, competitors, and topics.
Last updated: 2026-05-05
TL;DR — The fastest way is to paste your homepage URL into the dashboard's URL onboarding box. Pranas extracts your brand name, positioning (4 fields), industry, suggested competitors, and prompt topics. You can edit anything before saving. Manual entry is also available via Brands → Add Brand.
Why your brand setup matters more than you think
Everything downstream in Pranas — AI Scans, prompt generation, competitor analysis, perception scoring, gap analysis, the dashboard — keys off your brand record. The accuracy of your positioning (target audience, value proposition, differentiators, category) directly shapes:
- Which prompts the prompt generator suggests
- Which competitors are auto-detected from scan responses
- How perception drivers are interpreted
- How gap analysis maps missing concepts to your brand
A sloppy 30-second setup produces sloppy insights for months. A careful 5-minute setup produces meaningful insights from the very first scan. Spend the time here — it pays back.
Two ways to add a brand
From URL (recommended)
- On the Dashboard, locate the URL onboarding hero (visible until you've added your first brand).
- Paste your most authoritative URL — usually your homepage. Avoid blog posts, landing pages for one campaign, or login pages.
- Click Analyze.
- Pranas crawls the page and uses AI to extract structured fields. This takes 10–30 seconds.
- The Brand Data Preview dialog appears. Review every field, edit anything that's wrong, then click Save.
Manually
- Open Brands in the sidebar.
- Click Add Brand (top-right).
- Fill the form:
- Brand name (required)
- Website URL (required)
- Industry and sub-category
- Positioning fields (4 textareas)
- Country (defaults to your account country)
- Click Save.
Manual entry is the right choice for stealth-mode brands, internal tools without a public site, or when the URL crawler is blocked by your CDN.
What Pranas extracts from your URL
| Field | What we extract |
|---|---|
| Brand name | Pulled from <title>, OpenGraph tags, and structured data |
| Logo / favicon | Auto-fetched from /favicon.ico and og:image |
| Industry | AI-classified from page copy |
| Sub-category | More specific bucket within the industry |
| Target audience | Who the brand serves (e.g. "B2B sales teams at mid-market companies") |
| Value proposition | The core promise to that audience |
| Differentiators | What sets the brand apart from alternatives |
| Category | The competitive set the brand plays in |
| Suggested competitors | 3–6 likely competitors based on category and positioning |
| Suggested prompt topics | Initial topic seeds for prompt generation |
Everything is editable in the preview dialog. Nothing is locked in until you click Save.
Worked example
A founder runs Acme Feedback, a customer-feedback platform for B2B SaaS. He pastes https://acmefeedback.com into the URL onboarding box. Pranas returns:
- Name: Acme Feedback
- Industry: SaaS → Customer Experience
- Target audience: Product managers and CX leads at B2B SaaS companies
- Value proposition: "Turn user feedback into product decisions in days, not quarters"
- Differentiators: Real-time AI tagging, native Linear/Jira integration, free starter tier
- Category: Customer feedback management
- Suggested competitors: Canny, ProductBoard, Pendo, UserVoice, Featurebase
He notices Pendo isn't really a direct competitor for his ICP, removes it, adds Frill instead, then saves. The whole flow took 3 minutes and his first AI Scan now uses a tight, accurate competitor set.
Tips for high-quality extraction
- Use your homepage, not
/aboutor/blog/something. Homepages have the densest positioning signal. - If your homepage is sparse (single hero + waitlist form), use a richer page like
/productor/how-it-works. - Bot-blocking CDNs: If Cloudflare, AWS WAF, or Akamai is blocking our crawler, you'll see an error. Either temporarily allow the Pranas user-agent (
PranasBot/1.0) or switch to manual entry. - JavaScript-only sites: We render pages headlessly, so SPAs work — but if your site relies on user interaction to reveal copy, the extraction will be thin.
- Multilingual sites: Use the English version of your homepage if available; positioning extraction is strongest in English.
Edge cases & gotchas
- Plan brand limits apply: Free = 1 brand, Starter = 3, Growth = 5, Pro = 10. If you're on Free and try to add a second brand, you'll see an upgrade prompt. See Brand limits by plan.
- Parent–child hierarchy: If your brand is a sub-brand of a larger parent (e.g. Instagram under Meta), set this up after creation. See Parent–child brand hierarchy.
- Country scoping: Each brand has a country. This affects which scans, competitors, and search-volume data the brand sees. See Country scoping.
- Re-running URL extraction: You can re-extract from a brand's edit screen if your website has changed significantly. This won't overwrite your manual edits unless you confirm.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Could not fetch URL" | Site blocks bots or returns non-200 | Try a different page, or use manual entry |
| Extraction is empty / wrong | Page is mostly images, JS-gated, or behind login | Use a richer page, or fill manually |
| "Brand limit reached" | You've hit your plan's brand cap | Upgrade plan, or archive an unused brand |
| Competitors look generic | Category was misclassified | Edit the category, then click Re-suggest competitors |
